As the 2023 general election drew closer, a series of defections continued to hit the two major political parties in Sokoto state, the latest being about 7,000 supporters of the People’s Democratic Party who dumped the party before the All Progressives Congress, claiming the PDP had failed. in all sectors of development.
This was according to a press statement from the Special Assistant, New Media, to Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Bashar Abubakar, and made available to journalists on Friday.
The statement followed the mass defections that continued to affect the ruling PDP in the state.
Among the defectors, who were received by APC state governor candidate Ahmad Aliyu, in the state’s Wurno Local Government Area, were more than 4,270 PDP supporters of the LGA.
The governor’s candidate expressed satisfaction at the large number of PDP supporters the party has dumped for the APC, saying, “…there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Aliyu, who represented the APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, assured the defectors of equal treatment.
He assured that his administration would continue with the giant steps of the former governor of Sokoto state, Wamakko.
He promised to reconstruct Huchi Road, which was damaged by flooding, if he is elected governor in 2023.
Aliyu described the ruling party in the state as a failed party, saying: “(The) PDP in the state has failed miserably because none of the promises made to the people of the state have been fulfilled.”
In his remarks, the state APC chairman, Isah Achida, said while he welcomed the defectors, but said the party was always ready to go ahead to ensure its victory at all levels.
Likewise, more than 1,400 PDP loyalists joined the APC in the town of Achida in the Wurno local government area, the hometown of the state’s APC chairman, Achida.
Alhaji Musa Marnona, the APC chairman of Wurno’s local government, explained that for their part, they would continue to work hard for the party’s success in the area.
While in Gidan Rugga Ward from the local government of Kware 1,000 PDP supporters were received in the APC.
Several defectors who talked about why they dumped the PDP for the APC said the PDP lacked focus and direction to rule the state.
They described the APC leadership in the state under Wamakko as trustworthy and accommodative.
They also pledged to continue supporting the party to ensure the victory of its candidates at all levels.
Other APC leaders who witnessed the event include Deputy Governor candidate, Idris Gobir; APC Sokoto East Senatorial Candidate, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa, and former Ambassador Abubakar Wurno, among other dignitaries.
