Drivers diverted as tanker falls and blocks road to Anambra

There were multiple accidents on part of the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, Abba-Ukpo junction near the Dunukofia Local Government Secretariat, Anambra State.

The section of the lane was completely blocked by a fallen Premium Motor Spirit tanker, one of the vehicles involved in the accident.

It turned out that the crash, which occurred in the Awka-bound lane of the road, involved a Peace Mass Transit bus, Hyundai SUV and a fully loaded PMS tanker.

The area was completely cordoned off, while state firefighters were on site to ensure no fire broke out.

The development forced all motorists to use the Onitsha track, which is in deplorable condition, as an alternative to continue their journey to their various destinations.

Motorists and other road users had a hectic time navigating the dusty road as Federal Road Safety Corps personnel were also on site to ensure faltering motion.

Although at the time of submitting this report the number of casualties could not be determined as the accident is said to have occurred late Wednesday night.

However, some eyewitnesses said many were injured, but unsure of how many died in the road accident.

The resulting development caused a sluggish moment for travelers as they struggled through the poor sections of the alternate route.

The state fire chief, Mr. Martin Agbili, responded and said the fire truck and firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene of the incident to rescue the situation.

Agbili said the cause of the accident has yet to be determined as the incident took place at night.

In a statement, he said: “At approximately 8:00 AM today (Thursday), Anambra State Fire Brigade received an emergency call of a traffic accident consisting of a peacekeeping mass transport, a Hyundia SUV and a fully loaded PMS tanker at Abba-Ukpo Junction Enugu-Onitsha Highway.

“We immediately deployed our fire engine and firefighters to rescue the situation. Our agile and diligent firefighters are now doing the necessary.

“The road has been temporarily blocked to prevent further incidents or fire and to allow us to take appropriate action. Find another route for your trip.

“The cause of the traffic accident has yet to be determined, as the incident took place at night. However, some eyewitnesses told us that many had been injured and were unsure of how many died in the road accident.

“I want to applaud other sister agencies that attended the scene of the traffic and crowd control incident.”
