Father defiles daughter 12 years, 21 years in prison

An Ikeja special offenses court on Thursday sentenced a 52-year-old man, Akin Isaac, to 21 years for raping his 18-year-old daughter in Lagos state for 12 years.

Judge Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced the convict to 21 years in prison after pleading guilty to the one count elected against him by the government of Lagos State.

During the arraignment, state prosecutor Omowumi Bajulaye-Bishi told the court that Isaac had defiled his daughter aged six to eighteen.

According to the Prosecutor, the offense committed was in violation of Article 137 of the Criminal Law Cap C.17 Vol. 3 Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

In its verdict on the plea deal that the convict signed with the state, the judge said the 21-year sentence proposed by the Justice Department was too short for the crime carrying a life sentence.

She said: “I knew this case very well, I could remember the survivor crying when he testified in court that she had an abortion and how the defendant beat her.

“The prosecution had called four witnesses who testified against the accused. The defendant initially pleaded not guilty.”

Earlier, Judge Taiwo, who handed down the verdict to Isaac, had also instructed the court clerk to place the defendant on the witness stand to go through the plea agreement process in which he was asked whether he was coerced or coerced by anyone to have his change plea from not guilty to guilty.

Isaac replied that he decided to change his plea. He began pleading with the court to have mercy on him.

But Bajulaye-Bishi, when reviewing the facts of the case, said the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with his daughter between 2014 and 2020, resulting in at least one pregnancy.

“The defendant has also tried to get her to have an abortion and to give her regular medication to prevent pregnancy.

“The trial began on February 7, 2022, in which the prosecution called four witnesses before the defendant approached the prosecution to change his plea.

Consequently, the court acknowledged the convict’s confession and sentenced him to 21 years in prison.
