HOODLUMS rioted in the Ijanikin area of Lagos state on Thursday after an alleged masquerade attack on a member of the Awori community.
The attack by the mobsters left many people injured and activities in the shoe, bag and textile market were disrupted, forcing traders and residents to flee for safety.
Police in the state confirmed the incident and added that personnel were quickly on the scene to restore peace.
Nigerian Tribune learned that the mobsters, believed to be cult members, blocked the Lagos-Badagry highway, causing a stalemate.
It was also revealed that problems arose between supporters of two monarchs in the area during an ongoing anniversary celebration.
It was learned that a masquerade of one of the two monarchs had attacked a man allegedly loyal to the other monarch.
Angry supporters of the injured man, armed with Danish rifles, charms, machetes and other weapons, blocked the highway in protest.
The protesters reportedly destroyed vehicles belonging to drivers trying to resist them.
State Police (PPRO) Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin said in response to the incident that officers and men from the Ijanikin division were already on the ground just as he added that reinforcements had been sent to the area.
“The road has now been reopened. We are closely monitoring the situation,” Hundeyin said.
