Nasarawa pro-Obi women’s groups call for peaceful elections

Women’s groups in Nasarawa state supporting the political ambition of Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have called on residents of the state to avoid all forms of violence in the 2023 general election and vote credible leaders into office.

Support group spokesman Cecilia Anzaku said on Thursday in Lafia at a stakeholder meeting in preparation for the visit of the National Women’s Leader of the Workers’ Party to the state, that violence had influenced the outcome of previous elections in the country, hence the need to call for peaceful elections in 2023.

She went on to say that the women’s support groups, 22 with about 78,000 members in the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa state, would receive the LP’s national female leader, Dudu Manuga, before kicking off the presidential campaigns on September 28, 2022.

She expressed confidence that Peter Obi and other party candidates would win in the 2023 general election, saying Nigerians were tired of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party-led governments at the federal and state levels.

She said: “The leaders of the 22 women’s support groups are here to plan how to receive the Labor Party’s National Women’s Leader, who is expected to be in the state before the presidential campaigns begin. Our members are approximately 78,000 statewide and we are ready to give her a rousing welcome.

“Another reason for today’s gathering is to urge residents of the state to avoid all forms of violence as we approach the 2023 general election campaign season. Violence in previous years had prevented us from electing credible leaders into office, so we don’t want this to be repeated in the upcoming elections.

“Nigerians are tired of the ruling political parties because they have abandoned us. Schools are closed due to insecurity, food prices are too high on the market and so many bad things are happening in the country. We all want our country to get better, so I am confident that all Labor Party candidates will win their elections in 2023.”
