Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the state funeral events for the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
He was expected to depart Abuja on Saturday for the two-day event as he will join members of the royal family, world leaders – including members of the Commonwealth, heads of state, governors-general, prime ministers and foreign royal families – at the ceremonies, including the funeral service to be held at Westminster Abbey on Monday.
A statement from his spokesman, Laolu Akande, said ahead of the service that the vice president will be among the guests and dignitaries received by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla at a reception at Buckingham Palace tomorrow, Sunday. Earlier that day, the VP will have a bilateral meeting with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
Queen Elizabeth II was the head of the Commonwealth and the longest serving British monarch. She died at the age of 96 on September 8 this year at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
The vice president will return to Nigeria after Monday’s state funeral.
