Oyo Mesi divided among shortlisted candidates

Ten participants for the stool of the Alaafin of Oyo are said to have been shortlisted by the Oyo Mesi, the king makers in the city.

The head of the Oyo Mesi, who is also the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yussuf Ayoola, said this Friday in a statement from the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin of Oyo, Bode Durojaiye.

He said Ifa (oracle) would be consulted to choose the next Alaafin from the shortlisted candidates.

Basorun stated that members of the Oyo Mesi would soon meet to deliberate on the next step, which he said would be an Ifa consultation.

The statement read: “Whoever emerges among the shortlisted candidates will be the candidate and the next Alaafin of Oyo.

“The state government is not only informed, but it is also included in all our procedures before, during and after the interview period. The state government was ably represented by the chairman of the Atiba Local Government Area and some council officials.

“As for the Alapinni issue, he is a member of the Oyo Mesi, but currently unable to attend. In order to follow the proper process, he must be represented to keep him abreast of the development. He cannot be excluded from the scheme of things. That’s why we ask his representative. Health is wealth. We wish him a speedy recovery.”

“People should watch their utterances and refrain from reckless comments that could cause an implosion.

“People entrusted with the peace and tranquility of the city should not just rush to the press for mischief. It is better for someone to find out from the authentic source what he or she does not know than to go to the press and cause displeasure.”

But Oyo’s Iba Samu, High Chief Lamidi Olayanju, told our correspondent that he didn’t know anything about the shortlisted candidates.

Olayanju said: “I called Basorun and he told me that he was the one behind the news that 10 people had been shortlisted. Four of us don’t know about it. When we finished the interview on Thursday, we all agreed that we would meet next Tuesday to do so, but it’s news to me to hear that there are 10 people shortlisted on the radio. I called Basorun and he told me he was the author of the news.

“I heard on the radio that we had 10 shortlisted but I’m telling you I’m not part of that and I called four of us and they said they didn’t know about it. Agbaakin (High Chief Asinmiyu) told me that he was not part of the decision to choose 10 participants; Akinniku (High Chief Amusa Yusuf) also told me that he was not part of it; Alapini (High Chief Rasheed Sheu)

When asked whether the rest of the kingmakers would stick to the shortlisted candidates, he said: ‘Can you hold yourself to such a decision? We don’t know about them, we don’t know when he picked them, so we can’t stick to that.

“If we agree with him and the other contestants take us all to court, how are we going to defend what we weren’t part of?”
